Abstract

We have developed new prosthetic hands which are widely used by Japanese ordinary upper limb amputees. Our previous research shows three results. Firstly, cosmetic function is very important for Japanese amputees. Secondly, cylindrical grasping style is almost as same as lateral grasping style in Schlesinger's grasping styles, and those two prehension styles are more useful than other ones. Thirdly, there are not so many activities which necessary for both hands, but it is very inconvenient for those activities that human lost their right or left hand. We have been developing new electrically powered prosthetic hands according to these results. One is an light weight electric hand which is 0.3kg with a cosmetic glove and use a ultrasonic motor system. It scarcely make noise in opening and closing hand. The other is simple and good cosmetic system with lateral grasping style. We report evaluation results by an amputee using one of these new hands for activity of daily living (ADL).
