Abstract
The home front has played an extremely important role in the course of modern warfare. For Russia, in the case of the Russo-Japanese War, continuing with the war effort was made difficult by the outbreak of the first Russian Revolution. For Japan on the other hand, even though the toll taken by the war was far greater than for Russia, the endurance society showed paved the way for victory. Judging from the Hibiya Park Riot that occurred just after the Portsmouth Peace Conference it is clear that on account of the war Japanese society, too, was in a state of crisis and far from stable. This chapter explains what caused the differences in Russian and Japanese society by examining the state of the home front on both sides, especially the support for families of soldiers sent to the front and public aid for the war effort.
