Abstract
This chapter investigates the capability of multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS) for slope stability analysis. MARS, a multivariate, nonparametric regression procedure, is a local regression method that uses a series of local so-called basis functions to model complex relationships. The six input variables used for the MARS model in this study were unit weight ( d ), cohesion ( c ), angle of internal friction ( ϕ ), slope angle ( β ), height ( H ), and pore water pressure coefficient ( r u ). The factor of safety (FOS) of slope was the output of MARS. An equation is presented for the determination of the FOS of slope based on the developed MARS. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to determine the effect of each input parameter on the predicted FOS. The results confirm that the developed MARS has the ability to predict FOS of slope.
