Abstract
This chapter gives a synoptic view of the difficulties recognized in the calibration of roughness and roundness instruments and outlines the prepared standard specimens. Calibration of instruments should be carried out on the instrument in working mode. The four types of calibration specimens discussed in this chapter are type A, type B, type C, and type D. All these specimens are for overall checks of meter calibration. The stylus calibration method comprises caliblock, B1 block standard, chipped stylus, and the roundness stylus. The standards for texture and form instruments that come under height calibration are type A1 standards and crystallographic method. Two ways of calibrating roundness instruments are machined flat on cylinder and tilted cylinder. Furthermore, filter calibration, vibrating tables, calibration of scanning instruments, and chain of standards are also discussed. Hence, the height standard should be calibrated in a medium that is close to the function of the surfaces used subsequently.
