Abstract

The generally accepted theories pertaining to the processes accompanying the water retting of kenaf and flax have been exaniined. Experiniental evidence indicates that kenaf shows several marked dissimilarities to flax in that ribbons may contain sufficient natural acidity to prolong the onset of retting and that overretting of kenaf is of minor practical importance. The beneficial effects of aerobes during anaerobic retting are discussed.
