Abstract

The effect of (1,3-Dioxolan-2-ylmethyl)–triphenylphosphonium bromide (DTPB) on the corrosion of zinc in an aqueous solution of 0.5M citric acid was investigated at 30C using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques to introduce an ecofriendly bath for acid cleaning of zinc which has not been widely used in literature. The results obtained showed that DTPB could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion of zinc in citric acid solutionwith a 98.9% inhibition efficiency at a concentration of 3x10 M of DTPB. A synergistic effect between DTPB and KI was observed which enhances the inhibition capability of DTPB to obtain better percentage of inhibition than that achieved by using DTPB alone. The synergism parameter had a value of 1.2 and was found to decrease with temperature. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in which KI acts as an adsorption mediator for bonding metal surface and DTPB. 电 化 学 JOURNAL OF ELECTROCHEMISTRY
