Abstract

AbstractStyrene oxide was polymerized by the initiator ZnEt2/H2O and the structure of the resulting polymers was determined by means of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Both the crystalline and the amorphous fraction have regular head‐to‐tail structure indicating that the oxirane ring opens exclusively at the β position. The stereochemistry of the growth of the crystalline, highly isotactic fraction follows first order Markov statistics, while that of the amorphous fraction follows Bernoulli statistics.
