Abstract

The mechanism of crack propagation and its pattern were discussed during the contraction due to drying process in a mixture of powder and water. The test result showed that a crack initiated when the thickness was almost constant at a certain water content in weight while it had linearly reduced before it with respect a time. The tensile stress in the radial direction occurred due to the drying contraction and this stress caused the crack and promoted its growth in Mode I in the circular direction.
