Abstract
Sexual assault remains a significant issue in the United States. The National Violence Against Women (NVAW) 2010 Survey predicts that 1 in every 5 women will be sexually assaulted throughout her lifetime, and it reports that over 80% of those assaulted are under 26 years old at the time of the assault. Because sexual assault survivors (SASs) often seek medical treatment in the emergency department (ED), EDs can be an important source of sexual assault surveillance data.
