Abstract

Elbow injuries in athletic children and adolescents are a distinct clinical entity when compared with the adult population. The presence of the distal humeral physis, multiple ossification centers, developing muscular and ligamentous attachments, and articulating cartilage can contribute to characteristic pathologic conditions in vulnerable patient populations. Based on the age of the patient, the duration and location of symptoms, and the specific sport, the clinician can arrive at the diagnosis and develop a clear treatment strategy. Nonoperative treatment often can result in a high degree of success when treating this patient population; however, several conditions may require surgical intervention.
