Abstract

Amiodarone is the most commonly used antiarrhythmic and has approximately 37% iodine by weight which is approximately 40-120 times the recommended daily intake. Amiodarone has a long half life of 50-100 days and accumulates in adipose tissues, requiring over one year for complete excretion. Adverse effects include thyroid dysfunction, occurring in 15-20% of patients, yet there is limited literature on amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT). The timing of AIT relative to treatment duration varies greatly, ranging from weeks to months from start of treatment.
