Abstract

Description is given of the Quebec power system of Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Ltd, with particular reference to two 345 kV transmission lines equipped with single-phase automatic reclosing and transfer trip. Performance of the reclosing feature over a 13- year period is reported and evaluated. Influence of counterpoise and overhead shield wires on reclosing and on lightning performance is discussed. Results indicate that the single-phase reclosing is successful in maintaining system stability, with either or both lines in operation.
