Abstract

The paper presents the results of statistical analyses of data collected on the geotechnical properties of typical spoil materials in the Bowen Basin Coalfields of Queensland, Australia. These data have been used in an improved first order, second moment analysis of the reliability of spoil pile slopes, developed from an available two-wedge, limit equilibrium solution. Comparisons have been made between the traditional safety factor and the more appropriate reliability index for a particular (worst case) spoil pile geometry.
