Abstract

The principal market for micro-CHP is as a replacement for gas boilers in the 18 million or so existing homes in the UK currently provided with gas-fired central heating systems. In addition there are a significant number of potential applications of micro-CHP in small commercial and residential buildings. In order to gain the optimum benefit from micro-CHP, it is essential to ensure that an appropriate technology is selected to integrate with the energy systems of the building. This chapter describes the key characteristics of the leading micro-CHP technologies, external and internal combustion engines and fuel cells, and how these align with the relevant applications.
