Abstract

Environmental sustainability is a pressing and growing problem due to issues such as climate change, pollution and disturbances associated with biodiversity. A major cause of these environmental threats is pollutants in the atmosphere. In this chapter, we give a general outline of how metal oxide gas sensors can be prepared and how they have been used to monitor levels of environmentally important gases. We include a section on future trends which discusses some of the new approaches being used to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors. Finally, we conclude with some remarks on the outlook for metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors in environmental monitoring.
