Abstract

Intestinal spirochetosis is a treponemal infection of uncertain clinical significance. We sought to identify the incidence of intestinal spirochetosis at Royal North Shore Hospital, a major teaching hospital in Sydney. We identified 72 cases from 70 patients over the 13 year period 1999 to 2011. The mean patient age at time of diagnosis was 45.1 years (range 12–82 years; SD 17.0) and spirochetosis was more common in men (male:female = 1.57). Sixty cases were detected by endoscopic biopsy (random biopsies or polypecto-mies), eight from appendicectomies and four from surgical resection specimens. Based on estimated numbers of endoscopic biopsies, we believe that intestinal spirochetosis is identified in 0.2% of all colonic biopsies examined at our institution.
