Abstract

This chapter focuses on the recent analyses of the 'Name Glorifiers' by considering the views of two thinkers, Metropolitan Ilarion Alfeev and Sergei Khoruzhii. The first part of Alfeev's book The Sacred Mystery of the Church examines the Names of God in Scripture, the Church Fathers, the Hesychast tradition, and in the Russian tradition before the outbreak of imyaslavie . The second part examines the historical episode of imyaslavie from the publication of In the Caucasus Mountains to the expulsion of the monks from Athos, and the last part of the book considers the aftermath, including the continued development by Pavel Florenskii and Sergii Bulgakov. More sophisticated interpreters like Alfeev and Khoruzhii are capable of exploring positions for and against imyaslavie as theological opinions without raising the spectre of heresy, but most of the polemical literature automatically asserts that the opposing side is heretical. Keywords: Church Fathers; Hesychast tradition; Ilarion Alfeev; imyaslavie ; Russian tradition; Sergei Khoruzhii; The Sacred Mystery of the Church
