Abstract

Romania has chosen the CANDU technology mainly because of the nuclear safety features but also because of its economic advantages in a national context. Cernavoda nuclear power plants (NPP), with two CANDU-6 units in operation, provides approximately 18% of Romania’s total energy production, representing a reliable source of clean energy and having a proven record of safety performance and high capacity factors. The national regulatory framework for NPP has been developed gradually to integrate the latest available international requirements and relevant experience. The design and operation of Cernavoda NPP has been continually improved taking into account operating experience, the results of research and development activities, and the best standards and practices recognized at international level.
