Abstract

In this paper, an 8 × 16-element multibeam antenna array with integrated feeding networks is proposed. The whole antenna array comprises two groups of 8×8 dual-polarized bow-tie dipole antenna elements and 2×16 integrated Butler matrix feeding networks. By modifying the Butler matrix structures, four beam clusters are generated for 45° area coverage in the elevated plane in the measurement. The proposed multibeam antenna array adopts only 64 feeding ports, reducing the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains and downscaling the matrix dimension of baseband processing. Based on the communication performance analysis, the scheme with the proposed array achieves approaching channel capacity compared with the conventional scheme, but uses fewer RF chains, leading to promising usage for low-complex and low-cost massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems.
