Abstract

Background: Asians have higher diabetes rates than Non-Hispanic white (NHW) people, despite having lower BMI. Studies on Asians often present monoracial groups. We examined obesity rates among mono- and multiracial APIs. Methods: We examined obesity and other factors by self-reported race using case-control data from two integrated healthcare systems with large API populations. Results: Obesity varied by race, ranging from 8.5% (Chinese) to 53.5% (Other Pacific Islander) (Table 1). Obesity was high for multiracial API. Demographic, behavioral, and clinical factors explained some, but not all the differences in obesity rates (Table 2). Conclusion: Multiracial API people had higher obesity rates than monoracial API and NHW people. Robust data on multiracial people are needed to understand health disparities among this group.
