Abstract

Modern vaporizers have the potential to be a source of medication error during delivery of an inhalational anesthetic. This chapter discusses a case of inhalational agent overdose due to use error, reviews modern vaporizer design and function, and details causes of vaporizer malfunction. These include incorrect installation, improper transport, over-filling, and mis-filling. The implications of vaporizer malfunction are discussed, and the management of a suspected vaporizer malfunction is presented.
