Abstract

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists (e.g., ketamine) have rapid antidepressant effects in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Ongoing studies demonstrate that nitrous oxide, an inhalational general anesthetic and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, may be a rapidly acting TRD treatment.
