Abstract

For beginners in mechanical engineering, it seems difficult to suppose motion of each element that composes a certain mechanism. In this study, we propose a computer assisted instruction (CAI) system for simulating 3-dimensional mechanism construction. It is intended that the system is used by teachers to present their own visual materials in the class, and students also use the system as a self-learning software to see motion of any mechanism. We developed the system for gear mechanism construction and used in the class of machine drawing as a trial. Since evaluation of CAI system is necessary for improvement in the quality of contents, a questionnaire was issued to both of the teachers and the students participated in the class. Results of the questionnaire demonstrate that the system could satisfy requirements of the teachers. It was also revealed that the attitudes of students about learning are significantly affected by their impression of the contents provided by the system.
