Abstract

This chapter describes machine configurations for the production of braids with cross-sectional forms other than circular or flat. Braids with square cross-sections, used for gaskets, are discussed, followed by some new possibilities presented by a braiding machine with variable tracks. The chapter ends with a short overview of selected ideas from patents and the literature, for more complex configurations to produce braids with specific cross-sectional forms. Discussion is restricted to technology based on maypole braiding, and does not cover 3D rotary braiding (two-step braiding) or other technologies such as those based on the pillow lace technique.
