Abstract

The National Science Foundation is addressing the need to attract talented young people to fields of science, mathematics and engineering in its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The Fiscal Year 1988 allocation of $12 million supports about 3000 undergraduate students; $5 million of that went to create 140 new REU sites where about 1200 students are doing research. Most awards are $35,000–45,000.
