Abstract

This article reviews the practice of spoliation carried out against so-called nomads in France during the Occupation. This investigation provides a first set of historical data about a little-known spoliation. It is based on the cross-referencing of various archives: economic, financial and administrative sources relating to different aspects of this persecution, as well as the testimonies of the persecuted people referring to the fate of their property and that of their relatives. This study analyses the property abandoned or seized during escapes, following arrests, under house arrest or in internment camps. An aspect of the analysis focuses on the registration of financial assets and questions the value and inadequacy of compensation systems developed in the post-war period.
