Abstract

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) diagnoses in Anishininiiwuk (Oji-Cree) linguistic group of northeastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario are among the highest in the world, and a genetic variant known as HNF-1a G319S in this population has been associated with earlier onset of T2D. Historically, T2D in Anishininiiwuk communities was rare when Anishininiiuk people lived a traditional lifestyle as nomadic hunter-gatherers; a lifestyle associated with long periods of fasting and significant energy exertion.
