Abstract

The author initially reflects briefly on the relationship between internal conversion of heart and ecclesial renewal pursuant to the Ecclesia semper reformanda motif highlighted in Vatican II. Such a motif is pertinent not simply to the reform of the Catholic Church but to a deepening of its ecumenical relationships with our significant dialogue partners. However, the primary focus of the article will be exploring various institutional implications of such a call to conversion. The author considers various participative structures at different ecclesial levels: universal (synod of bishops), intermediate (episcopal conferences and particular councils), and diocesan (diocesan synod). He focuses especially on their purpose, competency, and membership in enabling the Church to respond to various pastoral challenges and foster genuine ecumenical progress.
