Abstract

As the understanding of gender variance has evolved from a disease-based model to an identity-based one, the approach of many clinicians has also shifted from an assessment model (sometimes called “diagnostic model” or “gate-keeping model”) to that of the informed consent model (ICM). Although such an approach would be in line with how much modern medicine is practiced in the United States, it has not been without controversy in this highly politicized field of medicine.
