Abstract

The middle cerebral artery (MCA) peak systolic velocity (PSV) assessed by Doppler ultrasonography diagnoses fetal anemia due to different causes. In this lecture we will review the story of red cell alloimmunization and answer the following questions: (1) Is the delta OD450 better than MCA-PSV or vice versa? (2) Where do we need to sample the MCA? (3) Which patients are candidates for the assessment of the MCA-PSV? (4) How do we use the information provided by the MCA-PSV in red cell alloimmunization? (5) Is the MCA-PSV reliable for the diagnosis of fetal anemia due to different causes? (6) At this time, is the MCA-PSV the standard of care for the diagnosis of fetal anemia? We will also discuss, as we proceed, how the sonographers and sonologists who do these tests achieve good training.
