1148: Preoperative assessment of breast cancer by ultrasound: Staging and multicentricity

Abstract

Introduction: If breast cancer is confirmed by imaging and core biopsy, a decision must be made for breast conservation or mastectomy with or without reconstruction. In 399 patients operated by mastectomy, preoperative mammography was compared with histopathology. In 43%, tumour extension was far more that mammographically expected. Other studies also showed a critical understaging by mammography.
