Abstract

Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug among pregnant women. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major non-psychotropic cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa. Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) are efflux transporters expressed at the apical membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast and are putatively important protective proteins for the fetus. To date, very little is known about the influence of cannabinoids on BCRP and P-gp in the placental barrier. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of CBD on P-gp and BCRP expression and function in BeWo cells (using MCF7 cells as a different origin cell line).
