Abstract

Exercise has many health benefits and participation in organized sports can have added social and health benefits for youth. Some research, however, suggests that performance pressure in the sports environment can potentially promote disordered eating behaviors. The purpose of this study was to explore in youth the convergence of participation in athletics with one particular eating-disorder behavior, compulsive exercise. Specifically, we focused on associations of children’s sports and compulsive exercise with parenting practices related to eating and weight, including how parents talk to their children about weight.
