Abstract

In 1848, Professor Francisco Freire Allemdo e Cysneiro (1797-1894) published the name 'Hyeronima' with a plate, as a separate or a dissertation, later collected with similar items under the title Plantas novas do Brasil (see Mohl & Schlechtendal in Bot. Zeitung 12: 456. 1854). Certain other opuscula bound with this in the Kew Library copy are separates from the Trabalhos da Sociedade Vellosiana Sebastianopolitana, but not the 'Hyeronima' paper, which lacks pagination; thus Milller (in Candolle, Prodr. 15(2): 268. 1866) was at fault in citing that journal as the place of publication of the generic name. Others, e.g. Pilar Franco (in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 111: 299. 1990), have given Archivo Medico Brasileiro as the place of publication, but this was the printer and publisher and not a journal. Farr & al. (in Regnum Veg. 101: 852. 1979) cited it as Euphorb. Hyeronima, which at least corresponds with the two top lines of the first page. Stafleu & Mennega (in Regnum Veg. 125: 70. 1992), followed by Greuter & al. (in Regnum Veg. 129: 550. 1993), cited the publication as Hieronima Alchorneoides which corresponds with neither the text nor the plate. [Nom. ed. note: According to ING, an amplified description (written 18 Nov 1850) was published, cited as: Arch. Palestra Cient. Rio de Janeiro 1: 56. 1858. DHN.] In the dissertation, the name is 'Hyeronima alchorneoides' in the text, but 'Hieronima alchornioides' in the plate-caption. Thus there was confusion from the outset as to the spelling of both genus and species names.
