Abstract

Recently, in-vehicle navigation devices have become very popular. Therefore accidents influenced by in-vehicle navigation devices are increasing. We analyze accidents using statistical method accessing a national accident database to discuss safety usability of in-vehicle navigation devices. Accidents influenced by in-vehicle navigation devices are characterized by vehicle type, accident type, driver biography, time of accident, a day of week, area of accident location, road geometry, driver behaviors, vehicle velocity, etc. Tendency of drivers using devices may characterize accident tendency. Moreover visual distraction by in-vehicle navigation devices may influence accident occurence.
