Abstract

To meet the requirements of communication networks and storage capacity, medical images are required to be compressed before storage and transmission. Therefore different compression techniques have been developed with an objective of reduction in data size as per recommendation in medical imaging. During the past few decades, a series of advanced developments have been made in medical image compression algorithms to enhance the efficiency of storage and transmission bandwidth. However, each compression algorithm has its own features and limitations and cannot be applied in every case. Consequently, this chapter presents the basic fundamentals as well as recent advancements in compression of medical imaging. The chapter concludes with a summary, a set of medical imaging compression algorithms, made available to a wider community of academics and practitioners for future directions.
