Abstract

This chapter discusses two broad classes of high performance continuous ceramic fibers (non-oxide and oxide). The processing, structure and properties of these fibers are reviewed. For non-oxide fibers, the emphasis is polymer derived ceramic fibers and both commercially available and developmental fibers are discussed. In the case of oxide fibers, the focus is on commercially available fibers. A summary of the current and anticipated applications together with research and development priorities in this evolving field is presented.
