Abstract
An examination of the Gothic in the United States gives a very different picture of Gothic culture to that in Britain. The history that American Gothic addresses in literature is mainly race and slavery; in film, it is often sexual violence against women. The influence of history on the American Gothic is very different to that seen in Britain, given that the United States does not have the same mediaeval legacy to draw upon. ‘New England Goths’ examines the Gothic influence in creative thinking in the United States looking at writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville, and Toni Morrison.
