Abstract

This chapter discusses the lateral dynamic stability. The main aim here is to solve the lateral stability equations for the case of free motion, i.e., the homogeneous case. It then uses these results to discuss the modes, their dependence on aircraft geometry, and the conditions for stability. The chapter starts by describing the estimation of the stability derivatives. Some of the aerodynamic mechanisms by which these derivatives are produced are covered here. The chapter also presents a discussion on the lateral modes and provides characteristics of each mode. These characteristics are the result of the interaction of several influences. Moreover, the effects of speed on the lateral stability are explained. Various figures, tables, and equations are elucidated here to further illustrate the concepts defined. Finally, the discussion concludes with a short section on control and lateral response. And an appendix is provided that outlines the solution of lateral quintic using a spreadsheet.
