Abstract

Database 2 (DB2) is IBM's relational database management system for the MVS/XA and MVS/370 environments. This paper presents the major features of DB2, its use of the SQL language, its architecture and the relationship of DB2 to the surrounding software and hardware. DB2 is designed for use as an operational database, supported by CICS/OS/VS, IMS/VS and TSO. Application development tools are provided for the DP professional, as well as a range of end-user products to meet the requirements of different groups of business professionals. DB2 is a significant milestone in the evolution of relational database management systems, and is well-placed to meet the data and application challenges of today and the future
