Abstract

Hot melt adhesives have been used for years as an adhesive replacement for latex. Hot melts are thermoplastic materials that can be easily spread or poured when heated. They have excellent moisture resistance and form good bounds at surface with little penetration. Most hot melts used in the carpet industry contain a combination of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), tackifiers, wax, oil, and mineral filler. EVA is used because it is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. EVA copolymers can thermally cross link at 190 ºC. This may give a low indication of the flow rate. Melt index (MI) is a key parameter in hot melt compounds. The primary use of MI is for coating properties of the compound. Lowering the melt index of a compound increases the softening point, elongation, stiffness, and hardness of the hot melt.
