Abstract
The Irish Sea that Edwin reached out to was crossed by active sea-lanes and exchange, revealed for us by distribution of imported pottery dating from the fifth century to early eighth. The best known of three codices to students of English literature is British Library MS Harley that contains, amongst many other works in French, Medieval Latin and Middle English, version of Middle English romance that is also preserved in related but distinct versions in several other medieval manuscripts, King Horn . In all other versions the Horn's father has the Gaelic-derived name Murry. The name All of derives from the familiar Old Norse name Olafr. Norse and Viking studies will not be to undermine or to devalue the special expertise required in philology, codicology, textual and literary criticism, art history and archaeology, but rather, quite straightforwardly, give those disciplines a new purpose and greater relevance to comprehensive cultural history. Keywords: archaeology; comprehensive cultural history; english literature; Irish sea; Olafr; Viking studies
