Abstract

This chapter discusses discipline, which is training that corrects, molds, and strengthens an employee at all levels in the organization in the interest of achieving departmental and company goals. Constructive discipline is positive, focusing on corrective action rather than on personalities; it focuses on the wrongful act, not the employee. Progressive discipline provides the offending employee with ample opportunity to improve. The basic rules of the disciplinary process are described: (1) put rules in writing, (2) discipline in privacy, (3) be objective and consistent, (4) do not humiliate the employee, (5) keep a record of infractions and disciplinary action, and (6) exercise discipline promptly.
