Abstract

The functions of a digital receiver, whether receiving signals from terrestrial transmitter or a satellite are the same. The source coding systems used in Europe and USA are different. A digital receiver's functions are to amplify the incoming RF signals, demodulating the IF into base-band bitstream, packet identification filtering that is demultiplexing of the signal, and understanding the user inputs. In this chapter, the circuit designs of the modern day set-top boxes have been explained in detail. With rising costs and improving technology, it is predicted that the tuning functions will soon be digitized under the process of “zero-IF.” Current consumer demands indicate that the set-top box also needs to function as a personal video recorder. D-VHS has been developed in which to facilitate digital recording; the set-top box would require providing output MPEG-II multiplex. In DVD players, there are three types of track structures that are illustrated in the chapter. DVDs also need content protection and this system is called content protection system architecture.
