Abstract

This section of the book Aquatic oligochaetes of the Netherlands and Belgium presents notes on communities in aquatic habitats of different species. It also contains the table of habitats of Lumbriculidae-species, habitats of species in smaller families, habitats of naidids species, and habitats of tubificid species. In temporary habitats there is only a short period of time in which the water body is filled with (some) water. In these habitats only the oligochaetes with a rapid reproduction (R-strategy) are able to survive and establish a population. These species reproduce asexually by means of parthenogenesis (Tubifex tubifex), architomy (Lumbriculus variegatus) or paratomy (Dero digitata, Nais elinguis). Cocoon-forming sexually reproducing species are not capable to reproduce in just a short period of time. So in these habitats the diversity is low, but the abundance may reach over 100,000 ind./m2.Keywords: aquatic habitats; aquatic oligochaetes; Belgium; Lumbriculidae; naidids; Netherlands
