Abstract

The concept of cancer-based therapy relies upon the improvement of efficacy with a reduction in toxicity. The chemotherapeutic agents have shown indiscriminate toxic reactions affecting normal and cancer cells both. Dendrimers are highly organized, hyper-branched, nanosized three-dimensional structure that plays a pivotal role in selective and enhanced delivery of drug-loaded nanoparticles to the cancer cells. Most of the dendrimers have access to the cancer cells due to enhanced permeation and retention effect, however, also have access to the normal or healthy cells of the patients. Aptamers are the short-length oligonucleotide having the capability to selectively recognize and attach to the cancer cells sparing the healthy tissues. They can survive in a wide range of pH, temperature, and dynamic ionic conditions, however, are unable to overcome the endonuclease degradation. A conjugation of aptamer and dendrimer has been found to overcome the effect of endonuclease providing a novel entity in the treatment of cancer lesions. The current review focuses on the use of aptamer functionalized dendrimer in cancer therapy concerning the utilization of genetic agents or chemotherapy.
