Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Nitric oxide (NO) facilitates transmission of nociceptive signals in the spinal cord of animals. Transplantation of an autologous lumbar disc on the nerve root results in the expression of inducible NO synthase in rat neural tissue and the development of radicular pain. We previously reported that preoperative NO metabolites (NO2- and NO3-: NOx) are quantitative predictors of postoperative pain relief in degenerative lumbar diseases (DLD).
