Abstract

The graphites will be used as an important structural material for the High Temperature Gas Reactor's (HTGR), but they may be subjected to oxidation under practical use. In the present study, accelerated oxidation experiments were carried out for fine-grained isotropic graphites (IG-11 and IG-110) under various stresses to examine effects of stresses on the oxidation. As a result, both of the graphites were found to deteriorate by the oxidation. For IG-11 (general purity grade), the oxidation was accelerated under tensile stress, whereas compressive stress restrains the oxidation. On the other hand, the oxidation was accelerated under tensile and compressive stresses for IG-110 (high purity grade).
