Abstract

Recently, many studies have discussed the characteristics of flow around a square cylinder, especially on the shape modification and drag coefficient. However, buildings usually have different heights and there are only a few researches on the effect of height aspect ratio to the flow characteristic. Therefore in this paper, we investigate the three-dimensional aerodynamic flow characteristics around square cylinder with grooves in different heights. We carried out wind tunnel tests to measure the drag coefficient of square cylinder with grooves. We also carried out flow visualization by a circulating water tunnel. As a result, we determined the effect of groove and aspect ratio on characteristics, under many conditions. We found that the drag coefficient of a square cylinder with larger aspect ratio has a higher drag coefficient Moreover, by applying grooves to the square cylinder, the separation flow area becomes smaller.
