Abstract

In order to investigate the influence of shot peening on the surface durability of steel rollers, the steel ones treated by single and double shot peenings were fatigue-tested using two cylinders testing machine under a sliding-rolling contact condition. The hardness and the compressive residual stress of the test rollers were increased by shot peening. Their surface roughnesses were also increased by shot peening, and the surface roughness of the double shot-peened rollers was smaller than that of the single shot-peened ones. The cause of failure of all the test rollers was the spalling due to the subsurface cracking. The surface durability of the shot-peened rollers was larger than that of the non-peened roller. In particular, that of the double shot-peened rollers was the largest in this study.
